Popliteus Tendonitis

Uncommon. Popliteus functions to stabilise femur against forward displacement on fixed tibia  overuse during downhill running.

Prolonged or excessive pronation of the foot may be risk factor.

Clinical features:
Pain in posterolateral aspect of the knee (origin of popliteus) – more common running down hill. Pain often localised over insertion of muscle.

Treatment:
Reduction in downhill running; NSAID’s; physical therapy
