Shaken Baby Syndrome:
Sudden deceleration of the head when an infant is held by the arms or trunk and shaken can cause brain injury – rotational forces also play a significant role. Autopsy usually show localised subdural haemorrhage, cerebral swelling and neuronal loss.

Clinical features – usually <3yrs; lethargy; seizures; irritability; alterations in muscle tone; impaired consciousness; vomiting; difficultly breathing. If severe  unresponsive, retinal haemorrhages.
