Critical illness polyneuropathy:
Develops in 50% of those in a critical/intensive care unit for >2 weeks; not related to illness causing need for care; responsible for difficulty in weaning patients off ventilator; if severe sensory loss and marked weakness; severity is proportional to length of stay in hospital; pathophysiological process is axonal degeneration; most recover, if recover from illness responsible for need for care.
