Vibratory sensation:
Assesses posterior column function.
Use 128 hertz tuning fork (gross evaluation of sensation) or use a vibration perception meter – two brands: Biothesiometer™ and Neurothesiometer™ (quantification of threshold).
Tuning fork is used on bony prominences and asking patient if they can feel ‘vibration’.
Vibration perception decreases with age.
Vibration threshold can vary with the force of application of the vibration tool.
Vibration perception meter vibrates at 100 HZ
