Dystonia:
• a type of ‘frozen athetosis’ – postures of limbs are distorted from excessive muscle tone – interrupted by frequent involuntary repetitive twisting movements; from sustained muscle contraction
• due to lesion in basal ganglia
Chorea, athetosis and dystonia may be considered as a series of disturbances that merge into each other
they can be problematic in Podiatric practice when trying to provide foot care to these patients, as in many the lower limb will undergo involuntary movements
