Micro-organism nutrition
Aerobes – grows best in atmosphere that contains oxygen.
Anaerobes – prefer to live without oxygen
Facilitative anaerobes – can survive in atmosphere that contains oxygen
Obligate anaerobes – cannot survive in atmosphere that contains oxygen
Heterotrophs – obtain carbon from organic material – chemotrophs use chemical energy as source of energy (eg all animals, protozoa, fungi, most bacteria). Phototrophs use light as the energy source (eg algae, some bacteria).
Autotrophs – obtain carbon from oxidation of inorganic material
Phototrophs – obtain energy from sunlight for metabolic processes
