Monokines (released by macrophages):
• interleukin 1 (Il-1) – stimulates T and B cells to proliferate; causes fever (resets ‘thermostat’ of hypothalamus
• tumour necrosis factor (TNF) – kills cells; helps activate T cells, phagocytes and eosinophils; damages blood vessels
