Uses frequencies in the range of 2-10MHz. Waves are emitted by a transducer that also detects reflected waves  processed and displayed.
Most commonly used for soft tissue abnormalities eg Achilles tendon, posterior tibial tendon, peroneal tendons, flexor hallucis longus tendon, anterior tibial tendon, plantar fascia, ganglia, Mortons neuroma

• not ionising radiation
• relatively low cost (compared to MRI and CT)
• can perform dynamic scanning
• portable equipment
• harmless to patient

• high reliance on skill of operator (significant learning curve for musculoskeletal imaging)
