Emphysema:
Due to deficiency if alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT) and cigarette smoking recurrent inflammation from release of proteolytic enzymes abnormal enlargement to terminal bronchioles.
Complications – recurrent infections; respiratory failure; cor pulmonale
Treatment – bronchodilators; antibiotics; adequate hydration; chest physiotherapy;
