Gallstones/Cholelithiasis
Affects up to 7% of females and 15% of males.
Two types – cholesterol stones and pigmentary stones
Aetiology:
Clinical features:
Most asymptomatic, 10% symptomatic
Biliary colic, cholecystitis
Complications – occlusion ( cholecystitis); empyema of gallbladder; pancreatitis; neoplasm
Treatment:
Surgical removal (cholecystectomy); bile acid administration for dissolving; lithotripsy
