Food Poisoning/Infective Gastroenteritis
Due to many causes.
Aetiology:
Non-toxin mediated – Salmonella; Campylobacter jejuni; Bacillus cereus;
Toxin mediated – Staph. aureus; Clostridium perfringens; Clostridium botulinum; E. coli
Clinical features:
Vomiting, diarrhoea 1 to 48 hours after ingestion of contaminated food or drink – usually in more than one person.
Treatment:
Public health measures to identify source of contamination.
Most need no specific management and subside in a few days.
