Iron Deficiency Anaemia (microcytic, hypochromic):
• commonest form of anaemia; more common in young females
• iron deficiency can be due to:
• increased loss of iron (eg chronic bleeding)
• inadequate intake (eg diet)
• inadequate absorption (eg GI disease)
• increased need for iron (eg pregnancy; periods of rapid growth)
• clinically – as above; if chronic  koilonychia
• management – iron replacement (ferrous sulfate, iron dextran)
