Haemolytic anaemia:
• due to increased and premature red blood cell destruction/haemolysis (normal lifespan is 120 days); could be as short as 5 days
• two main abnormalities:
• intracorpuscular defects (eg sickle cell anaemia; thalassemia)
• extracorpuscular defects (eg antibodies, infections)
