Diseases of the oral cavity
Dental caries (‘tooth decay’):
• more common in children and adolescents
• mediated by oral saprophytic bacteria
Periodontal disease:
•
Stomatitis:
inflammation of mouth – often in course of systemic disease
Ulceration:
• shallow painful ulcers on tongue or mucosa; most heal without scarring
• occur in 20% of healthy population’ associated with Crohn’s disease. coeliac’s disease, Bechet’s syndrome
• treatment – may be self-limiting; hydrocortisone lozenges held on ulcer can help
Oral candidiasis/thrush:
• fungal infection that causes creamy-white patches on mucosa – usually surrounded by border of erythema
