Opaque/clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye. Most common cause of gradual decreased visual acuity and 3rd most common cause of preventable blindness.
70% of those >70yrs develop cataracts (> incidence in those with diabetes).
0.5% of neonates have a congenital form.

Due to altered metabolic processes that affect structure of lens fibres.

Initially present as blurred vision; progress slowly

Management – eyeglasses  temporary improvement; larger print materials and/or use of magnification; surgery
