Thyroiditis

Thyroiditis:
Inflammation of thyroid.

Several types:
1) Silent lymphocytic thyroiditis
2) Subacute thyroiditis (granulomatous, giant cell, or de Quervain’s Thyroiditis)
3) Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, autoimmune thyroiditis)

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis:
Common cause of hypothyroidism. Common in several collagen vascular diseases (eg SLE, rheumatoid arthritis, MCTD). Typically females aged 20 to 60yrs.
Associated with HLA-B8, DR3

Subacute/de Quervain’s thyroiditis:
Viral induced inflammation. Pain in region of gland that may radiate to jaw. Thyroid hormone levels are raised.
