Chamois leather is a porous material that is used in foot orthotic production as a top cover material.
Chamois leather is very absorbent which makes it a good lining material for footwear as it can hold up to 6-7 times its own weight in water. As it is non-abrasive, it is also widely used as a cleaning and polishing cloth.
Traditionally it comes from the skin of the chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra; the ‘European antelope’) which is a type of goat found in the European mountain regions. Now chamois is made the flesh split of sheepskin or lambskin from which the grain (the top split) is removed by a process known as frizing and then tanned by processes that involves oxidation of oils in the skin. Synthetic chamois leather can be made from polyvinyl alcohol.
