Onychophagia (Nail biting)

Nail biting or onychophagia is a common compulsive habit of biting the finger and/or toenails with up to 30% of children regularly biting their fingernails. Pathological nail biting is considered an impulse control disorder. While this mostly occurs with the fingernails, 10-12% of cases involve concurrent fingernail and toenail involvement. The line between “normal” and “pathological” nail biting is not always obvious.
