Shock Absorption and Attenuation

Mechanism for absorbing shock:
1) Calcaneal fat pad
2) Foot function

Heel strike transient:
• most individuals generate a heel strike transient (very variable between individuals)
• significantly lower when wearing shoes (due to shock absorption)
• magnitude is lower in females, even after normalised for weight, height and leg length
