Abductor Hallucis

Abductor hallucis:
Proximal attachment – medial tuberosity of plantar aspect of calcaneus and flexor retinaculum
Distal attachment – medial side of proximal phalanx of hallux (combines with tendon of flexor hallucis brevis); some fibre attach to medial sesamoid
Open chain function – abduction and/or flexion of hallux
Closed chain function – stabilises the hallux in the direction of adduction and assists in stabilising the hallux on the ground; plantarflexes first ray; stabilises midfoot joints
Nerve supply – medial plantar (L5, S1, S2)
Arterial supply – medial plantar artery
