Wikis > Anatomy > Fascia > Ankle retinacula

Superior extensor retinaculum:
• Attached to anterior surface of lateral malleolus and anterior surface of the medial tibia
• Continuous with deep fascia of leg
• Contains tendons of tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus, and peroneus tertius

Inferior extensor retinaculum:
• Y-shaped
• Base of Y is attached laterally to calcaneus
• Upper band attaches to medial malleolus
• Lower band attached to plantar aponeurosis
• Prevents dorsal tendons from “bowstringing”

Flexor retinaculum:
• Between tibial malleolus and calcaneus
• Covers tendons of tibialis posterior, flexor digitorum longus, flexor hallucis longus and the neurovascular bundle

Peroneal retinacula:
• Bands from lateral malleolus to calcaneus
• Holds down peroneal tendons
