The calcaneus ossifies from the posterior aspect. Several patterns or stages of ossification are noticed. A six stage or scoring system has been proposed by ref.
Can be characterized as six different stages:
Stage 0: No ossification
Stage 1: 50% ossification
Stage 2: >50% ossification without full plantar coverage
Stage 3: >50% ossification with full plantar coverage
Stage 4: Partial fusion
Stage 5: Complete fusion
Sign of skeletal maturity.
Correlation:
– peak height velocity
– slipped capital femoral epiphysis
– Severs disease
