Penetrating Trauma/Foreign Bodies:

1% of emergency rooms visits by children are for penetrating trauma to foot.

X-ray’s show foreign body
Needle, wood, glass, plastic, hair

Initial management:
Cleansing of wound; tetanus prophylaxis; grossly contaminated wounds debrided and left open; non-weightbearing; close observation for infection.
Prophylactic antibiotics have been shown to be of little value  use discretion

If get osteomyelitis  if medical management fails  surgical debridement of involved bone and parental antibiotics for two weeks
