Calcaneal Bisection

Calcaneal Bisection:
Reference line for a number of measurements/observations. The traditional biomechanical assessment of lower limb alignment relies heavily on the calcaneal bisection, yet it is widely documented as being unreliable.

Technique:
• leg rotated to place posterior aspect of calcaneus in frontal plane
• posterior aspect of calcaneus is bisected by eyeballing the medial and lateral borders of the calcaneus (may be helpful to mark with the borders with a pen first)

During weightbearing, due to shifting of the plantar fat pad and skin, the calcaneal bisection may need to be redrawn in a weightbearing position for weightbearing measurements.
