Mupirocin*:
• eg Bactroban® – cream (2% mupirocin calcium) and ointment (2% mupirocin)
• produced by fermentation of Pseudomonas flourescens
• topical indicated for infected skin lesions, especially following trauma (eg laceration)
• very effective against gram-positive aerobes – inhibits protein synthesis by binding to isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase
• poorly absorbed through skin – 0.25% available systemically
• contraindication – history of sensitivity reactions
• adverse reactions – occur in 2% – itching, burning, pain, erythema, dryness
In Australia, mupirocin is on the National Podiatry Scheduled Medicines List.
