Musculoskeletal changes:
reduced bone mineral density is common in those with long standing Type 1 osteopenia and fractures
limited joint mobility (as a consequence of glycation of collagen) – usually referred to as Cheiroarthropathy (diabetic stiff hand syndrome) can not fully oppose the palms of the hand (prayer sign)
gout is more common in those with diabetes; hyperuricaemia is more common in those with obesity, hyperlipidaemia and hypertension increased risk for gout
adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder is more common in those with diabetes (Frozen shoulder)
Dupuytren’s contracture (palmer fascial thickening and flexor contracture) is more common in those with diabetes
muscle infarcts have been described – usually severe pain and swelling in calf or thigh
Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is more common
