Science Based Medicine vs Evidence Based Medicine

“Evidence based medicine simply looks at the published clinical research and accepts the findings. Science based medicine considers preclinical research, prior probability, consistency with the rest of the body of scientific knowledge, and the fallibility of most research. I like to think of it as this formula: SBM = EBM + CT (critical thinking)”

The hijacking of evidence-based medicine

“Science-Based Medicine” (SBM) and “Evidence-Based Medicine” (EBM) are related concepts in the field of healthcare, but they have distinct focuses and nuances.

Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM):

EBM is an approach to medical practice that emphasizes the use of the best available evidence from systematic research in making decisions about the care of individual patients.
It involves integrating clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research.
EBM considers three key components: individual clinical expertise, the best available external evidence, and patient values and preferences.
Science-Based Medicine (SBM):

SBM takes the principles of EBM a step further by explicitly emphasizing the scientific method and critical thinking in medical practice.
It focuses on ensuring that medical interventions are not only supported by evidence but are also consistent with basic scientific principles.
SBM advocates for the rejection of treatments that lack a plausible scientific mechanism of action or that have been debunked through rigorous scientific inquiry.
In summary, while both EBM and SBM prioritize the integration of evidence into medical decision-making, SBM specifically underscores the importance of a scientific foundation for medical practices. SBM not only considers the evidence from clinical research but also evaluates whether the proposed interventions align with our current understanding of biology, physics, and other relevant scientific disciplines. It serves as a broader framework that encourages a rigorous scientific approach to medical practice.”
