Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)
These devices have evolved from kidney stone shock wave devices (lithotripters) where they where designed to break up kidney stones. Newer pressure wave-generating machines are assumed to initiate a healing process in some soft tissue injuries.
Shown to be useful in heel spur syndrome/plantar fasciitis, ‘tennis elbow’, calcifying tendinopathy of shoulder, and non-union of fractures.
