Omeprazole

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor used for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and peptic ulcer disease. It is usually very effective and well tolerated.

Omeprazole works via blocking the release of stomach acid secretion by inhibition of the H+/K+-ATPase system that is found at the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells.

Common side effects: nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headaches, abdominal pain, flatulence.
Serious side effects: Clostridium difficile infection, higher risk of pneumonia, masking stomach cancer.
