HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins):
• eg atorvastatin, fluvastatin (Lescol), pravastatin, simvastation (Zocor), lovastatin
• very effective, few adverse effects  widely used
• blocks 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl (HMG) CoA reductase in the liver  prevents cholesterol synthesis, reduces serum cholesterol and LDL levels. Also increase HDL levels
• taken at night to inhibit nocturnal cholesterol biosynthesis
• slows progression of atherosclerosis; decreases risk for stroke and cardiac events
• adverse effects – liver toxicity, myopathy
