“The Digital Plantarflexion Test is a clinical test I developed about 15 years ago for the the diagnosis of plantar plantar plate tears. Plantarflexion of the digit produces pain, an increased plantarflexion stiffness (i.e. resistance to digital plantarflexion motion) and a relative lack of plantarflexion range of motion in more significant plantar plate tears. In other words, milder plantar plate tears will demonstrate only slight pain, only slight resistance to digital plantarflexion and more plantarflexion range of motion of the digit, whereas more significant plantar plate tears will demonstrate a large amount of pain and resistance to digital plantarflexion with the Digital Plantarflexion Test.”
