Systemic Causes of Metatarsalgia

Most common is rheumatoid arthritis. Common early or presenting symptoms is a metatarsalgia due to either involvement of the metatarsophalangeal joints and/or intermetatarsal bursa. In many cases, patients tolerate symptoms and the rheumatoid arthritis is not diagnosed until other symptoms progress. Metatarsalgia is a common symptom in established rheumatoid arthritis.
