Second Metatarsal Interspace Syndrome

Not to be confused with “second intermetatarsal space syndrome

May be common – not often described in literature.
May be a bursitis – may be due to overuse from a hypermobile first ray

Clinical Features:
Non-radiating pain at distal portion of interspace between first and second metatarsal heads. Pain present on walking and palpation.
Short first metatarsal is common.

Treatment:
Strapping to restrict first ray motion; accommodative padding or orthoses; corticosteroid injection.
