Skin Dermatomes

Skin Dermatomes:
Areas of skin innervated by the cutaneous branches of a single spinal nerve. Regions of typical dermatome maps are not as clearly delineated as most diagrams in texts show – substantial overlap and variability between subjects are noted in distribution:

L2 – anterior and lateral thigh
L3 – medial and anterior thigh, knee, medial leg
L4 – leg, medial and anterior knee (older dermatome maps show this going to the foot)
L5 – lateral leg and medial dorsum of foot
S1 – lateral dorsal aspect of foot, lateral malleolus, posterior ankle
S2 – posterior thigh, knee, leg
S3 – posterior thigh
