Calcaneus:
Dorsoplantar view:
Only distal end is present
May see what appears to be two joint lines due to saddle shape of calcaneocuboid joint, representing the dorsal and plantar aspects of the joint
Lateral borders of calcaneus and cuboid should be approximately straight
Lateral view:
All of bone can be seen
Lateral plantar tubercle forms a sclerotic line through the medial plantar tubercle
Calcaneocuboid joint is visible and forms lower half of cyma line
The posterior and middle subtalar joint facets should be approximately parallel
Trabeculations are sparse in body of calcaneus
posterosuperior aspect of calcaneus may be enlarged (Haglund’s)
Sustentaculum tali is seen as a sclerotic area at the distal superior portion of the calcaneus.
