Carcinoma of the cervix/cervical cancer:
20% of all malignant tumours of the female reproductive tract

More common in those who first have intercourse at an earlier age, have multiple sexual partners, history if HPV infection or other venereal diseases

Classified as preinvasive or invasive:
• Preinvasive – varies from mild cervical dysplasia to carcinoma in situ; up to 90% are curable with early detection and treatment; if untreated can progress to invasive form
• Invasive – cancer cells penetrate basement membrane  can spread directly to other pelvic structures

Treatment:
Preinvasive lesions – excisional biopsy; electrosurgical excision; laser destruction; cryosurgical
Invasive – hysterectomy; radiation

Public health screening programs
