Symmetry of Foot Orthotics

Wikis > Foot Orthotics > Foot Orthotic Issues > Symmetry of Foot Orthotics

What does a foot orthotic lab do if the negative models of left and right foot have different shapes?

Do the models accurately represent the shape of the two feet or did the clinician make a mistake during the modelling?

Do clinicians and patients want the left and right orthotics to look the same or do they want them different and reflect the differences in shape between the two feet?

Some labs under correct one foot and over correct the other to give the orthotics a symmetrical appearance?
Some clinicians want labs to do that – other clinicians don’t want them to do that.
Some labs will contact clinicians to confirm the difference in shape and that there is not a modelling error.

This is like the mirroring where during the CAD design process the orthotic for one foot is designed and then that design is just mirrored to the other foot rather than go through the time consuming design process.
