As hair shaft moves along pilary canal passes sebaceous duct.
Outgrowth that appears 13-15 week of gestation
Secretions:
• lipid rich
• continuous
• temperature may increase flow
• no neural basis known for control
Role of secretions in skin physiology:
• not clearly known
• long considered an important emollient
• recent works indicates that it is needed for separation of hair sheath from shaft during maturation of the hair
