Primary exercise headache (PEH)
-also known as benign exertional headache or effort headache
– PEH is likely to be the most common headache seen in athletes.
– like a migraine brought on by aerobic exercise.
– generally complain of a mild-severe pulsatile headache – worse with exercise in hot weather.
– last for 4-6 hours.
The ICHD-3 criteria for the diagnosis of PEH is shown below. 9
A) At least 2 episodes fulfilling criteria B and C
B) Brought on by and occurring only during or after strenuous physical exercise
C) Lasting less than 48 hours
D) Not better accounted for by another ICHD-3 diagnosis
PEH is a diagnosis of exclusion.
