On 14 June 2017 in Alexandria, Virginia, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson opened fire on several Republican members of Congress and their staff members, who were practicing for their annual Congressional Baseball Game for Charity against the Democrats. The gunman shot four people, including the Congressman, Steve Scalise, a Congressional aide, a lobbyist, and two police officers. Police officers assigned to protect Scalise shot and killed the gunman.

Steve Scalise, the House Majority Whip of Louisiana, was shot in the hip. At the shooting, Podiatrist and Republican Representative Brad Wenstrup ran to help Mr. Scalise to stop the bleeding. He later told CNN that he pinpointed the entry wound in the left hip, but he could not locate an exit wound. He used his belt as a tourniquet and rendered aid until help arrived using his podiatry skills and experience from serving as a surgeon in Iraq in 2004 and 2005. Scalise was in critical condition at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center after suffering damage to internal organs. The hospital said, “the bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding.”

Brad Wenstrup tweeted:

Scalise was visited in hospital by President Donald Trump:

The charity baseball game continued the next day which the Democrats won 11–2. CNN reported:

At the end of the game when Democratic manager Pennsylvania Rep. Mike Doyle was presented the winning trophy, he called Republican manager Texas Rep. Joe Barton to join him. Doyle gave the winning trophy back to the Republicans to put in Scalise’s office.

Congressman Scalise was discharged from hospital on 26 July after six weeks in hospital for continued rehabilitation at home. Statement from the hospital:

Congressman Steve Scalise has made excellent progress in his recovery from a life-threatening gunshot wound six weeks ago. Yesterday, he was discharged from MedStar Washington Hospital Center and is now beginning a period of intensive inpatient rehabilitation. He is in good spirits and is looking forward to his return to work once he completes rehabilitation. He and his family are grateful for the care he received from the trauma team as well as the other doctors, nurses, and staff of MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The family also appreciates the outpouring of prayers and support during this time.

Steve Scalise returned to the house floor 15 weeks later on the 28th September. During his speech he paid tribute to Brad Wenstrup. According to the Washington Post:

Scalise used his speech to highlight the lifesaving work of one of the unheralded players in the shooting incident: Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio), a backbench lawmaker in his fifth year in office — and a former combat surgeon with a Bronze Star from his Army tours in Iraq.

Wenstrup rushed to Scalise’s side on June 14, applying tourniquets to keep blood loss down until he could be flown to a trauma center. As Scalise led a standing ovation for Wenstrup, the Ohio Republican darted across the floor and into his friend’s arms, both lawmakers near tears.

One year later, on June 14 2018, Steve Scalise returned to the field to participate in the Congressional Baseball Game.

As an aside, the Encyclopedia of American Loons has listed him due to his anti-science stance.
