Green et al (1980) diagnostic approach to patient education:

Behavioural Diagnosis:
• Determine what specific behaviours are most likely to contribute to achieving the desired outcome.
• Priorities these behaviours in terms of their importance and changeability

Educational Diagnosis:
• Identify factors that are most likely to contribute to the performance of the behaviours
• 3 factors:
• Predisposing factors:
• patients beliefs about the disease and the efficacy of treatment  affect compliance
• Enabling factors:
• knowledge is not always sufficient to change behaviours
• patients needs the skills and resources to make changes
• Reinforcing factors:
