Amphotericin B:
• active against broad spectrum, but is very toxic; not absorbed from the gut (administered IV)
• usually only used for progressive or potential fatal infection
• binds to cell membrane increase permeability leakage of cations
• minds to ergosterol, so membrane of cell must contain it (bacteria cell membranes do not)
• toxicity is due to binding to cholesterol in human cell membrane
