Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) Mount:
Used for microscopic examination of skin samples for diagnosis of superficial fungal infections, candidiasis or tinea versicolour

Technique:
Take scrapings with blade from edge of lesion – can also collect contents of vesicles- sample placed on microscope slide – add drop of 10% KOH solution and apply coverslip. Heat slide over burner (do not boil KOH) – this dissolves keratinous materials. Examine with 10x lens with low intensity light. If fungal present, should be able to see hyphae.
