Training errors/risk factors
Errors in the training or conditioning program become risk factors for injury when:
• they to not allow for physiological adaptation to occur
• they do not recognise the sport specificity needs of training programs
• they do not recognise individual physiological responses to exercise
For example:
• too much volume or intensity of training
• too rapid increase in training levels (‘too much, too soon’) – excessive intensity and/or duration
• too rapid change of training routine (eg flat ground to hill training; from soft ground to hard road; from pre-season conditioning to in-season competition; from long road runs to speed work on the track)
• running only on one side of road if road has camber/bank will pronate ‘uphill’ foot and supinate ‘downhill’ foot more compensatory changes in the foot and a functional leg length difference
• insufficient warm up
• inadequate warm down
• poor or faulty technique
