Mupirocin

Mupirocin*:
• eg Bactroban® - cream (2% mupirocin calcium) and ointment (2% mupirocin)
• produced by fermentation of Pseudomonas flourescens
• topical  indicated for infected skin lesions, especially following trauma (eg laceration)
• very effective against gram-positive aerobes – inhibits protein synthesis by binding to isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase
• poorly absorbed through skin – 0.25% available systemically
• contraindication – history of sensitivity reactions
• adverse reactions – occur in 2% - itching, burning, pain, erythema, dryness
