The Vitruvian Man is a famous drawing created by Leonardo da Vinci around the year 1490. It is based on the work of the Roman architect Vitruvius, who described ideal human proportions in his treatise on architecture, “De architectura.” In Leonardo’s depiction, the Vitruvian Man is shown standing in two superimposed positions within a circle and square, with his arms and legs extended. The drawing is accompanied by notes written in mirror writing (a technique Leonardo often used) describing the proportions and measurements of the human body.

The significance of the Vitruvian Man lies in its representation of the ideal proportions of the human body as described by Vitruvius. Leonardo’s drawing is not only a study of anatomy and proportion but also a symbolic representation of the harmony between humanity and the universe, often associated with the concept of “divine proportion” or “divine symmetry.” The Vitruvian Man has become an iconic symbol of the Renaissance and is considered one of Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous and enduring works. It has been widely reproduced and referenced in various forms of art, literature, and popular culture, symbolizing the intersection of art, science, and philosophy during the Renaissance period.
